Spiritual Practices
In the spirit of passing on the wisdom of an elderly client, I share this with those of you who are elderly, middle aged or young and in relationship with someone elderly or middle aged. First of all those of us that are elderly or middle aged probably do not call ourselves this - and yet, it is where we are in life! Here is the essence of what this wise man said to me: Growing old gracefully is a series of adjustments. When he said it, I got it as well as I could, but he could probably tell I just had a vague notion of what he was really trying to share. So he proceeded to physically demonstrate it. He is a tall stately gentleman with a receded hairline, wearing a soft plaid shirt, and khaki slacks as he sat in the chair in front of my desk. We all move about life from day to day, hour to hour, and minute to minute… Often struggling for answers to big life questions. Well, I have been sent to you today to let you know that I have found the answer! At least it feels like the answer... and, it was all born in a text message! Before you actually turn your attention away from these words on this page, just stay with me for minute. Lately as I have been texting friends and families I have noticed that I kept making the same typo over and over again. Every time I went to type "love" the "o" would get mistakenly typed as an "i" (those two letters are right next to one another). This may not seem like a big deal to you, but it was a great moment for me! I realize that perhaps my smartphone was reminding me of a real key life lesson. A lesson that has come to life in the teachings of Jesus and a lesson that likewise dies in the midst of family and relationship conflict.
